This ‘Firefly Fan Film’ aims to deliver a much needed dose of the ‘Verse. Focusing on the relationship between a Companion and a man living on the planet Parrish, A Faithful Companion explores the question: What happens when a Companion falls in love?
In 2002 Firefly first aired and Malcolm Reynolds gathered a team to set sail in the Space Western penned by Joss Whedon. Less than a year later the show was cancelled despite the large crowd it had drawn over it’s short run. A Faithful Companion isn’t strictly a fan film, but a short that breathes in the ‘Verse created for Firefly and Serenity. Much like Axanar, a fan film that is scaring big production houses by appealing to fans and lifting up story and character development in favor of pricey CGI and explosives, A Faithful Companion is crowdfunding to keep true to the fans.

“The war’s long done. We’re all just folks now.” — Malcolm Reynolds, Serenity
It’s been more than a dozen years since Malcolm Reynolds and the crew of Serenity last set sail on the silver screen. There have been a few graphic novels, dozens of toys, board games, role-playing games, an upcoming MMO set in the ‘Verse, but despite continued popularity of the original show and the enduring love for these characters, there hasn’t yet been a second film. For a select few of us, that just won’t do.
Technically, A Faithful Companion isn’t strictly a Firefly fan film. It’s a Space Western Romance inspired by the universe that Joss Whedon created, but it features none of the ships, characters or settings of the source material. Instead, we looked out into the black, into the larger ‘Verse that might have gone on existing past the tales and adventures of those lovable few, and sought to bring forward a story of some other people who, like the crew of that Firefly-class vessel, are all just folks now.
And, let’s face it. Love is love. It don’t change much.
A Faithful Companion is a short film that explores the question, “What happens when a Companion falls in love?”
Of course, no two people are the same, and no two Companions will react the same way, so we don’t mean to speak for other Companions you might have known. This is just the story of Calliope Campbell, a girl raised on Parrish, and the ranch hand that wins her heart, Jeremiah. We’re exceptionally lucky to have those roles played by Katherine Diaz and Bed Paden, respectively.
If you’re thinking, “Those are the two most disgustingly good-looking people I’ve ever seen!”, well… yeah. We agree with you. Better yet, they can act! In fact, our casting process went coast to coast and we received over 1200 submissions. We accepted both video submissions and spent two 10-hour days meeting with local actors to narrow it down to these two. There are a few supporting roles yet to be cast, but we’ll keep you posted on those.
Principal photography is set to begin in early April in Florida. The film was written and will be directed by Frank Fradella, and produced by Talina Adamo.
The film’s fundraising campaign is live on IndieGoGo. Press can contact either Frank Fradella (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Talina Adamo (email@example.com) for more information.
